Our team has a long experience in electronic payments and mobile devices. Salt envisaged a world where intelligent phones would transform the way people engaged in transactions. For most of us buying products and services is intrinsic to our lives. Our goal is to bring a simpler, more convenient buying process to consumers and businesses.
A LITTLE HISTORY
Salt was a key factor in the Romans conquering the known world. Our modern word 'salary' is derived from the Roman use of salt as a form of payment. By using salt to pay their soldiers, the Romans were able to have a full time paid army, who usually had to fight soldiers who were in battle on enthusiasm alone and would have to return to their farm sooner or later.
Gold or even coins from Roman times were fine for high value trade, and you could pay a soldier for a year in advance, but how do you keep him around week by week? A soldier who wanted to trade for food or wine with people with no intrinsic use for gold or coins and who had difficulty determining they were real, found salt a convenient way to pay for what he wanted!
We chose the name Salt to recognise just how powerful an innovation in payment can be and how the implications can go beyond payment. Just as the Roman innovation helped conquer the known world before, our modern 'salt' once again gives those who use it a distinct advantage. While other technologies can allow you to quickly respond when you get to the front of the queue and are asked to pay, Salt enables you to completely bypass the queue!
Now Salt, the company, is continuing to evolve practical products that make life easier and more enjoyable.
